A
Welcome Message from Coordinators Jim and
Connie Lull:
Welcome to the 34th annual Riverhead Country
Fair! This is a great place to be on an
Autumn afternoon. Stay the day; enjoy the
best of our little town-wide block party!
On the west end of the fair is lovely Grangebel
Park, nestled below the dam on the Peconic
River. There in the park you will find pony
rides, folk musicians and various animal
exhibits. On the east end of the fairgrounds,
just before the Atlantis Marine Aquarium,
is our carnival and amusement area with
rides and games for people of all ages.
In
between the park and the carnival are
over
500 vendor and public service booths, police
and fire demonstrations, more than
40 food booths
offering all kinds of fare from popcorn
to calamari, commercial expo booths,
and
wandering musicians.
At
the two sided center of the fair are those
things which are unique to this great party.
The agricultural, needlework and homemaking
exhibits and competitions combine to remind
us when farming dominated the East End.
The old-time tractors, farm machinery, corn
strippers and other features of the exhibit
by the Long Island Antique Power Association
surround you with farm history. The vegetable
growers and cake decorators and quilt makers
and canning enthusiasts and wood carvers
and beer makers all compete for prizes and
provide displays for all to see.
Also
in this section of the fair are the children's
vegetable decorating contests and a free
taste of local agriculture provided by the
Long Island Farm Bureau. They serve a new
delicacy every hour from hot baked potatoes
to grape juice to broccoli and dip.
Next
door to the farm displays is the entertainment
stage with free entertainment all day and
a chance to listen and dance to a varied
schedule including folk, country, western,
and big band music.
In
front of the stage are two large booths
run by local service clubs. The Riverhead
Moose Club serves hot dogs and hamburgers,
the Rotary Club serves beer and snacks.
All of this can be enjoyed in the Beer Hall
Tent where you can sit, rest your feet,
and listen to the music. The fair's headquarters
are located there as well, so please feel
free to stop in for a visit.
All
funds raised by the Fair are disbursed
through Townscape, Inc. for beautification,
revitalization and educational projects
in our town. The Fair Committee and Townscape
are volunteer organizations in support
of Riverhead.
Years
ago, someone looked at the Riverhead Country
Fair, at the dozens of volunteers, the hundreds
of participants and the thousands of fairgoers,
and dubbed the Fair "a community at
work on behalf of itself." That is
as true now as it was then. The Riverhead
Country Fair stands alone in what it has
achieved on behalf of the town which spawned
it.
